(1734 - 1806) Signer of the Declaration of Independence, financier and politician. Morris was instrumental in the financing of Washington's armies, and was later financially ruined through his speculation in western lands. Uncommon partly-printed D.S., 1p. 9 1/2" x 4 1/2", "Office of Finance", Philadelphia, Mar. 24, 1783, a thirty day sight draft in the sum of 1,600 Dutch guilders issued to Daniel Parker "Value here received on Account of the United States of America", boldly signed by Morris as "S. J. of Finance". Morris was undoubtedly raising funds to pay off Continental Army soldiers. Refusal of the states to contribute would lead to a political and financial crisis within a few short months. Fine.
