(1738 – 1789) Signer of the Declaration of Independence, a planter, soldier, and statesman from Yorktown, Virginia who represented his state in the Continental Congress and was its governor in 1781. Nelson also fought in the militia during the Siege of Yorktown, and is said to have urged Washington to fire on his own home where Cornwallis had his headquarters, offering five guineas to the first man to hit his house. Rare partly-printed D.S., 1p. 8vo., July 28, 1785, an indenture in which Nelson borrows one hundred pounds from one Benjamin Lester, half of which was to be paid back within a year, inexplicably discharging the obligation. Scattered light toned spots, else boldly signed and a fine example.
THOMAS NELSON, JR.
