LEO MARKS (1920–2001) English writer, screenwriter, and cryptographer. During the Second World War he headed the codes office supporting resistance agents in occupied Europe for the secret Special Operations Executive organization. Marks composed original “poem codes” for emergency use by undercover resistance agents. His most famous, “The Life That I Have”, was composed for SOE Agent Violette Szabo who was captured by the Germans two days after D-Day and executed in 1945. Rare D.S., 1p. 4to., a tribute to Violette Szabo bearing her name at top, a brief history of her SOE service, and the text of “The Life That I Have”, boldly signed in black marker by Marks at bottom. Fine.
