War-date letter of Union Pvt. Elbridge Franklin, Co. C, 5th Michigan Infantry, 5pp. 8vo., "At the wharf at Alexandria", Mar. 17, 1862 to his father, in pencil. In small part: "...The 2nd & 3rd Mich Regts. are now going onboard the steamers, in one hour we shall go...We none of us know where we are to go only down the Potomac. An immense number of troops are now camped near Alexandria waiting transportation. Cavalry & artillery have been embarking last 2 days...10 batteries...waiting their turn...50 to 75,000 men are to go on the expedition...Gen. McClellan's address to the Army of the Potomac was [?] yesterday...it increased the confidence of the soldiers in our General...It has been read and re-read and read aloud by the soldiers...There are now one large steamer...others are arriving..." Franklin penned a postscript from aboard the steamer Arrowsmith, in part: "...Eight regiments have now embarked & they are still coming...McDowell's division will be next, then McCall's...We do not expect to go away until in the night..." Very good.
