War-date letter of Union Pvt. Elbridge Franklin, Co. C, 5th Michigan Infantry, 7pp. 8vo. on spectacular Magnus letterhead showing Zouaves, McClellan, and Lander, "Camp Michigan", Feb. 23, 1862 to his parents. In small part: "...the 16th the Regiment went out on picket...Monday Co. C & 20 cavalry went out scouting...it rained which froze & covered us with a coat of ice...[to] where Co. H had the skirmish...some citizens were engaged in this fight...a portion of the company...searched all the houses in the neighborhood bringing away all the firearms...and taking one man prisoner. I saw some frightened women...for without any ceremony we walked in & up stairs, down cellar, under the bead into every room...the boys liked the work...[we] secured off the first picket post of the rebels...The rebels are not near as much in a fighting mood...many of the enemy have been called from Manassas...Yesterday was a holiday...each regiment had the farewell address of Washington read to them...Salutes was fired from all the batteries & forts..." Very good.
