(1809-1865) Sixteenth President of the United States who led the Union through the Civil War and emancipated the slaves, assassinated. LINCOLN APPROVES THE PROMOTION OF A FRIEND AND FUTURE GENERAL Good association A.D.S. at the conclusion of an A.D.S. sent to him by his life-long friend, Illinois Sen. ORVILLE H. BROWNING (1806-1881), 1p. 8vo. [n.p., n.d., likely Washington, ca. Aug. 5, 1861]. Browning makes a recommendation for a captaincy: "...I apply to have John Tillson of Illinois appointed a captain in the army. He has been in active service as a Major ever since the beginning of our troubles, and is a most competent and deserving man, and a highly educated and intelligent gentleman..." At bottom, Lincoln happily concurs: "I most cheerfully indorse the above application. A. Lincoln Aug. 5, 1861". Docketed on verso by Browning as well. Vertical folds clear of signature, else very good. The letter is carefully tipped into a superb copy of "Honest Abe" by Alonzo Rothschild (New York: Houghton Mifflin & Co.), 1917. 374pp. 8vo., a very fine, fancy fully black leather gilt-trimmed binding with marbled boards, extra-illustrated with various additional plates, engravings, etc. JOHN TILLSON (1825-1892) would render distinguished service to his country. Commissioned into the 10th Illinois and the U.S. 19th Infantry, Tillson would rise through the ranks to serve as colonel and would receive from Lincoln a brevet as brigadier general on March 10, 1865. His promotions were largely on account of the gallantry he displayed at Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, in Sherman's March to the Sea, and other battles and campaigns. Tillson and Lincoln knew each other well: Tillson was married to the daughter of former Illinois Gov. John Wood, a staunch Union man. Tillson was also a lawyer, and corresponded with Lincoln on common legal matters and like Lincoln, ran for public office.
