(1767 - 1845) Seventh President of the United States, "Old Hickory" became a national hero in his defense of New Orleans and as president encouraged Western expansion and paid off the national debt. A.L.S. as President and signed "The President" in the text, with holograph address leaf, 1p. 8vo., [Washington], Apr. 18, 1831 to his Secretary of the Navy, JOHN BRANCH (1782-1863). In full: "...The President with his respects to Gov. Branch Secretary of the Navy, requests to see him at 2 oclock P.M. to day at his office." Branch dockets the letter: "Relates to the [?] duties of the Cabinet". Fine. At this time, Jackson's cabinet was in turmoil, rocked by the Petticoat Affair brought on by the wife of Vice President Calhoun and which would result in the resignation of all but one of Jackson's original cabinet members.
