(1742 - 1787) Signer of the Declaration of Independence. While serving in the militia he was captured by the British at Charleston in 1780 and imprisoned St. Augustine. Especially rare and desirable A.L.S. with initials "A. M.", 1p. 8" x 6 1/2", [Charleston?], June 29, 1783 to "P. Smith." In part: "...I have drawn on you for [Pounds] in fav'r of Mr. Collector Izard. Mr. T. W. has in his Possession a Note for 400. Dollars wh. I gave to Col. W. in Phila'a if your are in Cash I must request you to take it up...I beg it may be done as I have rec'd a Jog about the Subjects...pray send me a light, handy, strong umbrella, the sun has almost touched my Brain...My love to Polly..." Expertly inlaid, fine condition. Ex: Kenneth Rendell, ca. 1960-67.
