A poignant Civil War relic, a ninth-plate (2" x 2 1/2") daguerreotype presenting a waist-up view of a fashionable young woman, with rose accents added to her cheeks, and gold to her earrings and crucifix necklace. The image is mounted in a brass frame decorated with military symbols, American flags and the slogan "The Union Now And Forever". The image is further inserted into a black gutta-percha case, with a long lock of braided brown hair tied with black thread, undoubtedly belonging to the woman pictured, sandwiched between the daguerreotype and the rear of the case, with patent marks visible behind. Very good overall.
CIVIL WAR "SWEETHEART" DAGUERREOTYPE WITH BRAIDED HAIR LOCK
