War-date letter sent home by Union Pvt. Elbridge Franklin, Co. C, 5th Michigan Infantry, 4pp. 8vo., "Camp before Yorktown [Va.]", Apr. 17, 1862 to his father on the siege of Yorktown. In small part: "...we must be nearly ready to commence the attack for nearly all our earthworks are complete...[and] a magazine which a day's work will finish...Expecting an assault on the enemy in a few days...[Brother] Luter is getting along first rate I think he can help us take Yorktown. I think most of the fighting will be done with artillery...the large numbers of pieces we have must...reduce Yorktown...The rebels threw a large shot at us. It struck the ground 25 yds from me, buried itself deep in the ground, then exploded throwing up a large amount of earth...had it continued on its course 5 rods further it would have passed through the left of this Co..." Very good. The Confederates would remain in Yorktown until withdrawing on May 4.
