Fine, large example of an early American powder horn, approx. 16"long, 3 1/2" dia. at the base. The body of the horn is carved with elaborate, skillfully executed images including a large vase of orchids interspersed with birds and insects and a field of stars, separated by repeating foliate and geometric patterns, with the base encircled by a band of primroses interspersed with geometric patterns. A wood plug affixed with iron pins seals the base, and is fitted with an iron ring securing a leather lanyard. The plug for the pouring spout at the tip is absent, and the body of the horn shows a few small wormholes, else very good. A much finer example than we usually see!
