Excellent original photogravure print, 9 1/4" x 12 1/4", a sepia-toned chest-up frontal portrait of a Native American man by noted photographer Edward S. Curtis. The image is titled at lower left, identifying the subject as "Crow Ghost", with his tribe "Arikara". The publishing line "From Copyright Photograph 1908 by E.S. Curtis" appears immediately beneath the image at center. The image is printed on Van Gelder paper, with a distinct border left by the edges of the gravure plate. The top edge of the sheet is gilt, indicating that the print was removed from an edition of Curtis' "The North American Indian", Vol. 5, published 1909 by the University Press of Cambridge, Massachusetts. Slightly ragged at the right at bottom edges as printed, shows two small chips at the left edge where disbound, shows mild toning with a mat line at the right and bottom edges, and with the minute pencil numeral "195" on the verso at top left, else very good. EDWARD S. CURTIS (1868 - 1952) was an American photographer of the American West and of Native American peoples. He made over 10,000 wax cylinder recordings of Indian language and music and took over 40,000 photographic images from over 80 tribes.
