Excellent original photogravure print, 9 1/4" x 12 1/4", a sepia-toned chest-up frontal portrait of a Native American man by noted photographer Edward S. Curtis. The image is titled at lower left, identifying the subject"'s tribe as "Kutenai Type". The publishing line "From Copyright Photograph 1910 by E.S. Curtis" appears immediately beneath the image at center. The image is printed on Van Gelder paper, with a partial watermark visible at lower left. A faint border left by the edges of the gravure plate surrounds the image. The top edge of the sheet is gilt, indicating that the print was removed from an edition of Curtis' "The North American Indian", Vol. 7, published 1911 by the University Press of Cambridge, Massachusetts, and printed by John Andrews & Son. Slightly ragged at the right at bottom edges as printed, shows a repaired 1" tear at lower center with a 4 3/4" horizontal crease across the center of the image, else very good. Estimated accordingly. EDWARD S. CURTIS (1868 - 1952) was an American photographer of the American West and of Native American peoples. He made over 10,000 wax cylinder recordings of Indian language and music and took over 40,000 photographic images from over 80 tribes.
