(1816 - 1902) Union brigadier general, involved in suppressing Confederate guerrillas and opposing raids from Arkansas and the Indian Territory. Among the high points of his career were two victories over Joseph Shelby, at the Second Battle of Springfield during Marmaduke's first raid, and at Marshall, Missouri, during Shelby's Great Raid of 1863. Scarce A.L.S., 1p. 8vo., Cuba, Mo., Jan. 20, 1892. In part: "...Gen. D. Coleman...may be able to furnish you with letters or give you information where you can procure them, written by Gen. Morgan L. Smith..." Fine.
