(1788 - 1858) American army officer and diplomat who negotiated the Gadsden Purchase acquiring New Mexico and Arizona for the United States. A.L.S. with integral address leaf, 3pp. 4to., Charleston, Sep. 14, 1844 to John Branch, territorial governor of West Florida. Gadsden discusses steamship schedules between Savannah and Jacksonville and mentions how he wished he could return to Florida again. He complains about mismanagement of federal currency and of the banking institutions, and states his belief that Branch would be worthy of helping make that possible. He finally mentions that his cotton crops had escaped infestation by cotton caterpillars. Seal tear costs a few letters of text, else very good.
