(1816-1897) Union brigadier general who fought at Vicksburg and under Sherman at Atlanta and in the March to the Sea. Partly-printed D.S. "Jno. E. Smith", 1p. oblong 4to., [n.p.], Jan. 11, 1873, a ration return for Company K of the 2nd Cavalry Regiment, recording the rations issued to what appears to be a single man of the unit in an eight-day period. Smith signs at the conclusion in black ink as colonel of the 14th Infantry Regiment, with a cavalry captain countersigning. Ragged at the top edge, with a portion of a ledger sheet affixed to the verso at the top edge, and with a small tear to the left edge, else very good.
