Extensive archive of letters and papers kept by George Brown of Halifax, circa the early nineteenth century. The most notable pieces of the collection were sent by his mother Mary Brown of London, and include: A.L.S., 4pp. 4to., Lambeth, Oct. 6, 1814, in small part: "...News arrived here last week from the States of America of the City of Washington haveing been Conquered by the British. I do not aprehend this to be by the Expedition you alude to in your letter... but from some of our ships on the Coast therefore it is expected we shall hear of more bloodshed yet before Peace to be Concluded with America. You must be surrounded with numbers of the Army & Navy...[all sic]" The group also includes a second A.L.S., 3pp. 4to., Lambeth, July 5, 1815, in part: "...O my dear son we have to lament the Woeful Consequence of the return of Bonaparte to the throne of France. I am sorry you will hear such dreadful News by the British Papers of the most Dreadful Battle that has been Fought yet during the War, it commenced on the 15 and ended on the 18 of June," clearly a reference to the Battle of Waterloo. She continues: "...Shocking to relate that though Wellington has gain'd the Victory he says our loss is Immense. It is calculated the kill'd & Wounded on all sides to be not less then 100-1000 men, what an awful scene... the Duke of Brunswick & many officers of high rank are among the slain... [all sic]" Many additional pieces besides, including many pages of verse and essays by Geroge Brown, which together indicate that he is a preacher or similar religious figure. Worthy of further research, and should be seen. Approx. thirty pieces overall.
