Elder discusses the Battle of Gettysburg that has ravaged his town just two weeks prior, in part: "...We have had very exciting times with us during the past Month in Consequence of the Rebels Coming in to our State and Pennsylvania but with the Blessing of God Genl. Meade with the army of the Potomac gave them a good Thrashing & made them put back again. It was a series of very severe battles. A large number Killed & Wounded on both sides. We took a great many prisoners. Genl. Lee got over the River with at least 20,000 less than he had when he came over..." He signs at the conclusion in black ink.
