Interesting grouping of six original photographs, each 7" x 9 1/4" b/w, showing the aftermath of the scuttling of the Vichy French fleet at Toulon on November 27, 1942, preventing its capture by approaching German forces. The photos, taken during the aftermath of the operation by an unidentified German photographer, are all printed on period Agfa-Brovira paper, and depict a number of French ships lying sunken or burning at their berths. The ships shows here include the battleship STRASBOURG (with Wehrmacht guard aboard), the cruiser MARSEILLES, the destroyers TIGRE and PANTHERE, and several other unidentified vessels. Although similar views to those presented here have been reproduced elsewhere, we can find no instance of these exact images ever having been published. All unfortunately show some damage to the emulsion at the edges and corners, with several showing additional spots of discoloration within the frame, still very good.
