(1892 - 1966) German SS general, one of Nazi Germany's most decorated soldiers. Prior to 1929 he was Hitler's chauffeur and bodyguard but received rapid promotion after his participation in the Night of the Long Knives. Commanded 6th Panzer Army in the Battle of the Bulge. Sentenced to 25 years imprisonment for the execution of American P.O.W.s during the offensive. Rare S.P., 3" x 3 1/2" b/w, a glossy first generation (though known) photo of Dietrich while at trial in Nuremberg for war crimes, signed in full at the bottom with only his first name bearing acceptable contrast. One small spot, else very good. Likely obtained by a guard. Dietrich was sentenced to life imprisonment in the Malmedy massacre trial and imprisoned at the Landsberg Prison in Bavaria. He served only ten years and was released on parole in 1955. He was re-arrested in 1956 and charged for his role in the killing of SA leaders during the Night of the Long Knives in 1934. He was sentenced to 19 months for his part in that purge and returned to Landsberg, released in 1958.
