WALTER URBANOWICZ(1908-1996) Poland's foremost fighter pilot of World War II who fought on three fronts: Poland, in the Battle of Britain and in China with the Flying Tigers of Gen. Claire L. Chennault. Urbanowicz was credited with destroying 28 German and Japanese planes. With the RAF, he flew with 145 Squadron, and later with 303 Polish Squadron, which he also commanded. Important manuscript signed battle report, 2pp. 8vo., [n.p., but U.K.], Aug. 12, 1940 - only eight days after he joined his first squadron, 145 Squadron, and four days after he shot down his first enemy aircraft. The dramatic report, in two pieces as it was excised from two different pages, notes that Urbanowicz encountered "40 Plus" Junkers and Dornier bombers, with Me-110 fighters flying low at 1,700 feet south of Selsey. He dictates, in part: "...I was flying RED 2 No. 145 Sqdn...As soon as I became airborne I saw E/A over Portsmouth going South. I followed Red 1 to attack...I saw the E/A attacked by Red 1 dive into the sea. I then saw a Ju 88 by itself at 1700 feet and delivered a beam attack...the E/A dived vertically into the sea. The E/A appeared to have been attacking a small coastal vessel..." Nicely signed at conclusion. Urbanowicz is a joint leading character in the films "Mission of Honor" (U.S.) and Hurricane (U.K.).
