WALTER URBANOWICZ (1908-1996) Poland's foremost fighter pilot of World War II who fought on three fronts: Poland, in the Battle of Britain and in China with the Flying Tigers of Gen. Claire L. Chennault. Urbanowicz was credited with destroying 28 German and Japanese planes. With the RAF, he flew with 145 Squadron, and later with 303 Polish Squadron, which he also commanded. Fine content war-date partly-printed D.S., 1p. 4to., [n.p., n.d. but bears pencil date "26.9.40" at upper-left), a "Combat Report" signed by Flight Officer Urbanowicz while serving with the famous Polish 202 Squadron. Only 11 days after "Battle of Britain Day", as the Luftwaffe gears up for nighttime terror bombing of British cities, Urbaniwicz describes his encounter with an He-111 and a Me-109 at 1630, 1600 feet over Portsmouth. In part: "...I perceived a formation of about 30 bombers. We attacked 3/4 from the rear above. After breaking up enemy's last formation, I attacked...firing from a distance of about 400 yds., saw E/A [an He-111] begin to smoke and return to its formation. I approached nearer and fired another burst, after which E/A fell to earth entirely wrapped in thick black smoke...Enemy bombers held their formation in spite of continued attacks...". File hole at upper-left, else very good. Urbanowicz is a joint leading character in the films "Mission of Honor" (U.S.) and Hurricane (U.K.).
