(1892 – 1955) German generalleutnant and war criminal. He is best known for his retreat from Vilna and the command of the garrison of Warsaw during the Warsaw Uprising of 1944 during which he gave the order to "kill all men encountered, remove women and children, and burn houses." Arrested by the NKVD in Romania, he spent the rest of his life in Soviet captivity. Recipient of the Knights Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords. Rare war-date S.P., 3 1/2" x 5 1/2" b/w, a bust portrait in uniform, boldly signed in the white bottom margin. Sold with the accompanying letter of transmittal signed by his aid sending the photo, Oct. 7, 1943. Fine.
