Good pair of items signed by U.S. fighter pilots involved in "Operation Vengeance", which shot down the aircraft carrying Japanese admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, the mastermind of the attack on Pearl Harbor. Includes: JOHN W. MITCHELL (1915-1995), U.S. flying ace and the leader of the operation, S.P., 8" x 10" b/w, a view of Mitchell standing in front of a P-38 Lightning fighter. He signs at top left in black ink, adding his rank "Col USAF (Ret.)" Signature somewhat shaky, obviously signed later in life, else very good to fine. WITH: THOMAS G. LANPHIER, JR. (1915-1987), U.S. fighter pilot given partial credit for shooting down Yamamoto's plane. A.L.S., 2pp. 4to., [n.p., n.d.], to a "Vanderbilt". He thanks his correspondent for his kind words of encouragement, signs in full at the conclusion in blue ink, adding a lengthy post-script on the second page seeking to arrange a lunch meeting, and signing again with his initials "T L". Shows original mailing folds and staple holes at top left, else very good. Two pieces.
