Good lot of five items signed by notable U.S. Navy figures, includes: Admiral RAYMOND A. SPRUANCE (1886-1969), signature "R.A. Spruance" in black ink on a 6 1/2" x 3 1/2" first-day cover honoring the U.S. Navy, adding his rank "Admiral, U.S.N." Very good. WITH: Admiral ELMO R. ZUMWALT (1920 - 2000), T.L.S., 1p. 8vo., [n.p.], Sep. 22, 1972, to Chief Petty Officer Harry S. Morris, enclosing a signed photo as requested (not present), and signing at the conclusion in blue ink. Fine. WITH: Secretary of the Navy FRANK KNOX (1874-1944), partly-printed D.S., 1p. 4to., Washington, D.C., Jan. 13, 1943, a certificate appointing a Fred Linder Fitzpatrick to the rank of Lieutenant in the Naval Reserve. Knox signs at the conclusion in black ink. Shows a few spots of soiling, else very good. WITH: Admiral ROBERT B. CARNEY (1895-1990), good association T.L.S., 1p. 4to., [n.p.], March 17, 1955, to "Meet the Press" host Lawrence E. Spivak. Carney politely declines a request to appear on "Meet the Press", but suggests that he and Spivak meet in another forum to discuss issues related to the postwar Navy. Shows a large, uneven area of toning to the upper left side, else very good. A retained copy of Spivak's initial letter to Carney is also present. WITH: RICHARD H. O'KANE (1911-1994), captain of the USS TANG, the most successful submarine in U.S. Navy history. Fine I.S.P., 8" x 10" b/w, a Navy file photo of the TANG, signed by O'Kane in black ink at bottom left, adding: "Sole Captain USS Tang". Very good. Five pieces.
