(1914 - 1995) RAF ace and Equerry to King George VI and Elizabeth II, best known for his ill-fated romance with Princess Margaret. Despite his distinguished career, as a divorced man there was no chance of marriage with the princess, and their relationship caused enormous controversy in the mid 1950s. Margaret later renounced Townsend, although she herself would divorce later in life. Interesting content A.L.S., 1p. 4to., St.-Leger-en-Yvelines, Aug. 20, 1975, to a Joseph Kover. He relates a vignette from his 1950's travels around the world, in part: "...travelling down the road, what little remained of it, built by General 'Vinegar Joe' Stilwell in Burma. It took me seven days to cover twenty-four miles. At one point the bridge across a river had been swept away and the only chance of continuing was to for the river. To do this I had to work for hours leaving boulders into the numerous pools to fill them up. As I worked half a dozen Nagas (a one-time head-hunting people) appeared out of the jungle and set to work with a will. Their help enabled me to cross the river before nightfall and find shelter on the other side. [all sic]" He signs boldly at the conclusion in blue ink. Shows original mailing folds, includes the original transmittal envelope, very good.
