(1890 - 1969) 34th President of the United States, Supreme Commander of Allied forces in Europe during World War II and largely responsible for the successful invasion on D-Day. Fine association T.L.S. "Ike E." on his "DDE" letterhead, 1p. 4to., Gettysburg, Oct. 7, 1966 to Gen. JAMES VAN FLEET. In part: "...Thank you very much for your letter about the Korea Society. It was a delight to read the list of some of the Society's accomplishments over the past few years...It is doubtful that Mamie and I can come to the Premiere...the doctors have strictly limited the amount of traveling I can do..." Very good. JAMES VAN FLEET (1892-1992) was an American four-star general who landed on the beaches at Normandy and led troops across the Cotentin Peninsula, at the Bulge and at Remagen. He later battled the Chinese in Korea and seized the crucial "Iron Triangle". The Korea Society is a private organization dedicated to the promotion of greater awareness, understanding, and cooperation between the people of the United States and Korea. SOLD WITH: MAMIE EISENHOWER T.L.S. on her letterhead, 1p. 8vo., Brussels, 1969 to Mrs. Van Fleet. In her holograph postscript Mamie notes: "...Hear Van [James Van Fleet] is to be over here for D day assn[?]" Two pieces.
