(1896 - 1984) American general, commanded the landings at Salerno and Anzio against the forces of Kesselring. Good content war-date T.L.S. on "Headquarters Fifth Army" letterhead, 1p. 8vo., [Italy], Jan. 26, 1944 to a supporter in the U.K. four days after the Anzio landings. In part: "...Thanks for the things you say concerning the progress of the war in Italy...we too hope that the war will end this year. Of one think we can be sure - before the year 1944 is ended we will be well along the road that is leading us to victor..." With transmittal envelope which also bears Clark's self-censoring signature. Six days earlier, over 1,600 men were lost in a disastrous attempt to cross the Gari River - an expedition which would have Clark called before Congress.
