Highly important mimeographed typed document, 50pp. folio, Nuremberg, Nov. 21, 1947, the opening argument for the United States in "Military Tribunal I, Case No. 8, The United States of America against Ulrich Griefelt, et al.", known popularly as the "RuSHA Trial". This case, argued from Oct. 20, 1947 to March 10, 1948 at the Palace of Justice at Nuremberg, tried 14 defendants for crimes against humanity, war crimes and membership in a criminal organization, for their role in the implementation of Nazi "pure race" programs as officials of the SS organizations RuSHA ( the "Race and Settlement Main Office"), the office of the RKFDV ("Reich Commissioner for the Consolidation of German Nationhood"), VoMi (the "Repatriation Office for Ethnic Germans"), and the "Lebensborn" society. The statement presented here was prepared for U.S. Chief Counsel for the Prosecution Brig. Gen. TELFORD TAYLOR (1908-1998), with this particular copy marked as a duplicate produced by the International Refugee Organization's Tracing and Child Search Division while the trial was in progress. The chief of this division, Herbert Meyer, is listed as a research analyst for the trial on the statement's cover page. The verso of this page presents a diagram showing the organization of these offices within the SS, their office heads and the chain of command from SS chief Heinrich Himmler to these subordinates. The statement thoroughly describes the role of these offices in carrying out the "racial purification" of territories occupied by Germany. It reads, in very small part: "The crimes of these defendants, thirteen men and one woman for which they stand here accused, are the result of a vast and premeditated plan to destroy national groups in countries occupied by Germany. This program of genocide was part of the Nazi doctrine of total warfare, war waged against populations rather than against states and armed forces... This program was based primarily upon the two Nazi concepts of Race and Lebensraum... This theory of race played a prominent role in the rise to power of the Nazis. It convinced the German masses of Aryan supremacy and taught them that the Germans were more entirely Aryan than any other race. They were the 'Nordic Germanic race', the Master Race. Thus, the German people, by purifying themselves, casting out Jews, Slavs, and other non-Aryans, were to become the foremost race on earth... It must be realized that under the Nazi theory of race, non-Aryans simply did not matter. Hitler stated this clearly in Mein Kampf when he said, 'All who are not of good race in this world are chaff'... This then was the program of genocide. It was a coordinated plan aimed at the destruction of the essential foundations of the life of national groups. This destruction can be and was accomplished with the help of these defendants by a number of different means which may broadly be classified as physical, political, biological and cultural. They sought the 'disintegration of the political and social institutions of culture, language, national feelings, religion, and the economic existence of national groups, and the destruction of the personal security, liberty, health, dignity, and even the lives of the individuals belonging to such groups'..." The statement goes on to describe the creation and rise to power of the SS, defines the offices to which the defendants belonged and their specific duties, the "forced Germanization" of occupied territories through deportation and resettlement, the theft of public and private property, the extermination of undesirable groups in concentration camps, the kidnapping of "racially valuable" children and their adoption by Aryan parents, and Nazi efforts to hamper the reproduction of "undesirables". It concludes, in small part: "...From these defendants we shall soon hear variously formulated and developed apologies and excuses in justification or mitigation of their crimes. When they are heard let this tribunal not forget that they were not of an occasional or casual character but were deliberate and integrated parts of the sinister program of genocide, a program to strengthen Germany at the expense of other peoples and nations. To the successful fulfillment of this program, all of the defendants in the dock devoted their untiring efforts and abilities... For their crimes we seek from this Tribunal a just retribution and a reaffirmation of man's right to live in peace and dignity under the law." The document shows notable toning and chips to the edges, and several pages have detached from their original staple at top left. It remains somewhat fragile overall. The document originates from the estate of journalist Gerald Kean, and the cover page and the verso of the final page are liberally covered with his pencil notations, most indecipherable but with one identifying the aforementioned Herbert Meyer as "My Source". It is accompanied by a document envelope made from a repurposed map, bearing the typed warning "Confidential and Personal", suggesting the Meyer provided the transcript to Kean ahead of its official release. The statement is further accompanied by two additional typed documents, the second and third quarterly reports for the International Refugee Organization's Child Search Division for 1949, each tabulating statistics on refugee children reunited with their families during the respective quarters, and each prefaced with a T.L.S., 1p. 4to., from Herbert Meyer introducing the reports.
