(1897-1978) Commander of the 5th Panzer Army which spearheaded the ill-fated Ardennes offensive of January 1945. After vainly requesting more help from a vacillating Hitler, he spoke despairingly of "a corporal's war". Later served as a delegate to the Bundestag (1953-7). Great association D.S., 1p. oblong 4to., [n.p.], 1974, a printed copy of Dwight Eisenhower's Dec. 22, 1944 message "To Every Member of the A.E.F." following the commencement of the Battle of the Bulge. Ike praises his men, adding that the Germans are fighting "savagely to take back all you have won and he is using every treacherous trick to deceive and kill you...he will completely fail...rise now to new heights of courage, or resolution and of effort..." Manteuffel, who led the opposing Germans, adds his bold blue signature at bottom beside an Eisenhower stamp and first day cancel. Fine.
