(1883 - 1946) "Vinegar Joe", American Army general who commanded all American forces in the China-Burma-India theater in World War II; a brilliant tactician and combat leader. Nice content T.L.S. "Joe", 1p. 4to., Carmel, Nov. 11, 1944. Just before his departure to command the U.S. Tenth Army in the last few days of the Battle of Okinawa in 1945, Stilwell writes to "Col. W. de P. Johnston" in Washington. In part: "...My dear Slats, They shot me out of town before I got your note. (I wonder if I have halitosis?) But I am grateful for your offer, and hope to see you if, as, and when I get back...I expect you to play the piano and tell dirty stories till all hours..." Lightly toned.
