Great content Normandy Waffen-SS soldier’s letter, 1p. 4to., from SS- Feldpost #23474/A, July 14, 1944. Waffen-SS soldier Fritz Dettl, of SS-Panzergrenadier-Regiment 20, 9th SS Panzer Division Hohenstausen writes his mother. In part: “…My best thanks for your letter of July 3, which I can answer right away since I have already been lying under an armored tank the whole day, because we are getting shot at day and night, they must have unbelievable amounts of ammunition. Tomorrow morning we will also attack again. About my eating you don’t have to worry, because in this area of operation we have everything, the civilians, if they got away alive, left everything behind. You can’t imagine what stuff is lying around here, so you don’t have to be hungry…” Very good. The division had been pulled back only four days earlier after losing nearly 1,900 men in the defense of Caen. Over the next few days, they would decimate British tank forces thrown against them, and later keep the Falaise Pocket open before retiring to Arnhem having lost have its strength.
