(1882 - 1946) German field marshal and army chief of staff under Adolf Hitler, convicted of war crimes and executed at Nuremberg. Good content T.L.S. on his O.K.W. letterhead, 1p. large 4to., "Fuhrerheadquarters", Apr. 9, 1943 to BERNHARD RUST (1883-1945), Nazi Minister of Science, Education and National Culture. In a letter demonstrating dwindling Wehrmacht resources, Keitel reaches out to German students to fill diminished ranks in the army administration. In part: "...the supporters and departments of the Wehrmacht imply that the release of soldiers for the Front was carried out by me...while a batch of soldiers was released without substitution...[including] 40 mathematicians in individual fields of work...its is not possible to obtain suitable replacements. Since young people study mathematics at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences in Berlin, I ask you to work towards having 40 math students made available to the High Command of the Wehrmacht...[with] announcements...made to the female student body...the [accepted] student should resign..." Dockets, file holes at left, else fine.
