Good pair of early studio portraits of Chinese nationalist general and politician CHIANG KAI-SHEK (1887-1975), the first 9 1/2" x 12" b/a, a chest-up portrait of Kai-Shek in uniform as a young officer, circa early 1920's. The gold foil seal of the Chung Hwa photography studio of Shanghai is affixed at bottom left, beside the pencil signature of the photographer. Just good condition, showing two approx. 3" tears to the left and right edges, with additional smaller tears and chips, and with minor toning. The second, 9 1/2" x 11 1/2" b/w, presents a chest-up view of Kai-Shek in uniform later in his career, with general's rank tabs visible at his collar. The portrait bears the blind-embossed mark of the Kwonghwa photography studio of Nanking at lower right, with Chinese characters inscribed in ink at the bottom edge. The image has apparently been trimmed, as the aforementioned inscription is partially cut off, with a small tear to the left edge and slight folds, else very good. Two pieces.
