EDWARD H. KEELING (1883-1954) Conservative Member of Parliament for Twickenham. Interesting content T.L.S., 1p. 8vo., London, March 12, 1946, to Lance Corporal F.M. Colgate. In full: "Thank you for your letter. The trouble is that we have got not only to garrison Germany and other European countries lately our enemies, but are forced by the reckless election promises of the Labour Party - to allow unlimited Jewish immigration into Palestine - to maintain a large army there to keep the peace between Jews and Arabs." He signs at the conclusion in black ink. Shows numerous heavy folds overall, with a 2" tear at center-left and large chips and soiling to the top edges, good to very good overall. In January of 1946 the Anglo-American Committee of Inquiry was established as a joint British and American venture to examine the political, economic and social conditions in Palestine as they bore upon the problem of Jewish immigration and settlement and the well-being of the peoples living there; to consult representatives of Arabs and Jews; and to make other recommendations "as necessary" for ad interim handling of these problems as well as for their eventual solution. Ultimately the Committee's plans were rejected by both Arabs and Jews; and Britain decided to refer the problem to the United Nations.
