(1899 – 1942) German U-boat commander and Knight's Cross recipient. He is credited with the sinking of at least three submarines including the British submarine HMS H49 on 18 October 1940 off Texel and the Soviet submarine K-23 on 12 May 1942 off Nordkyn. He was killed in action on 9 July 1942 near Hammerfest when his submarine chaser U-Jäger 1110 ran into a naval mine. REare S.P. 3 3/4" x 5 1/2" b/w, a chest-up pose sporting his K/C, boldly signed in blue ink. Mounted to a portion of a period album page. Fine.
