Extraordinary and obviously very rare 1936 Berlin Olympics award certificate for the Silver Olympic Medal in Handball. This beautiful 11 3/4" x 16 1/2" certificate was issued by the "Deutscher Reichsbund fur Leibesubungen", the organization headed by Hans von Tschammer und Osten and which sponsored the Berlin Olympics. It was presented to Franz Bartl of Vienna, a member of the Austrian team which played three matches, in Berlin on Hitler's birthday, April 20, 1938. Of course, Bartl received his silver medal at the Olympics, but the presentation of this elaborate award document, made by famous graphic artist Max Hertwig, was delayed until all such documents to winners from "Grossdeutscheland" were prepared. The document is in very fine condition, and the first we have seen offered. Regrettably, Franz Hartl was killed in action during the war.
