(1847 - 1934) German general and politician, crushed the Russians at Tannenburg and in Poland, forced to yield the Chancellor's office to Hitler in 1933. Fine association D.S., 1p. legal folio, Berlin, Apr. 1, 1933, the promotion of future lieutenant general GERHARD BERTHOLD to the rank of major. Co-signed by WERNER VON BLOMBERG (1878-1946) Minister of Defense and Supreme Commander of the German Armies early in Hitler's regime, resigned following accusations that he had married a prostitute. Very fine. GERHARD BERTHOLD (1891-1942) German lieutenant general and Knights Cross recipient. Berthold commanded Infantry Regiment 82 in the Polish campaign and Infantry Regiment 17 in the Western campaign. He was later promoted to major general and fought on the eastern front in Central Russia. Taking command of the 31st Infantry Division, Berthold fell in April 1942 at the battle for the Saizewa Gora in Juchnow.
