Very rare handwritten envelope addressed to German Col. WILHELM RITTER VON THOMA (1891–1948), a German officer who commanded the ground and sea elements of the Condor Legion in Spain, then led Panzer division in the drive on Moscow. The envelope bears von Thoma's name and the notation beneath "Imker - Droh[ne]", literally "Beekeeper" and "Drone". These were code names for the land and Panzer contingents of the Condor Legion, Group IMKER being the land troops and Group DROHNE being the Panzer forces. Mail to von Trotha and other Condor Legion soldiers was sent to a Berlin forwarding office. This postal cover bears May 2, 1938 receiving and forwarding stamps from that office. Interestingly, the (illegible) letter within was penned in Luxembourg on April 28, 1938. Fine condition.
