Excellent lot of five documents pertaining to the service of Machinist's Mate Paul Freudenreich who would be lost in the sinking of the German submarine U-90. Included is: very rare large award certificate for the Spanish Cross in bronze, issued on June 6, 1936 - very few Kriegsmarine sailors served in the Spanish conflict; award certificate for the Service Award 4th class, as machinist's mate, Wilhelmshaven, July 1, 1939; award certificate for the U-boat War Badge, issued on Jan. 11, 1940; award certificate for the Iron Cross, 2nd class, issued Jan. 30, 1940; award certificate for the U-boat War Badge for the fallen as a tribute for his service, as Oberinaschinisten, issued on June 22, 1943. On her first patrol, U-90 departed Kiel on June 30, 1942. The boat hugged the southern Norwegian coast before turning west and sailing through the gap separating the Faroe and Shetland Islands. She was attacked and sunk by depth charges from the Canadian destroyer ST. CROIX in the Northern Atlantic on 24 July, taking Freudenreich and his fellow crewmen to the bottom with her. Average foxing and wear, overall very good.
