(1893 - 1946) German politician who began his career as an ace in World War I, rose to become Hitler's right-hand man and head of the Luftwaffe, finally captured and committed suicide on the eve of his execution. Fine association partly-printed D.S., 1p. small folio, Berchtesgaden, Dec. 31, 1938. While at his vacation home in Bavaria, on New Years Eve, Goering promotes Luftwaffe Major Walter von Hippel to the rank of Oberstleutnant. Afew marginal folds and some light soiling, else very good. WALTER VON HIPPEL (1897–1972) would become a Luftwaffe general and command several flak divisions. On 29 July 1940 as Oberstleutnant and commander of Flak-Regiment 102 (mot.), von Hippel was awarded the Knight's Cross while his unit was in France. The regiment would be destroyed in Tunisia in 1942.
