(1915 - 2008) American bomber pilot of the Enola Gay, which dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima, August 6, 1945. Signature in blue ink on a non-official first-day cover celebrating the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II through the atomic bombings of the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. An explanatory note explains that the stamp affixed to the cover is an unofficial recreation of a stamp whose release was canceled by the U.S. Postal Service, in response to complaints from the Japanese government.
