Outstanding oversized memorial photo album, 154pp. 21 1/2" x 14 1/2", entitled "United States Military Cemeteries, European Theater Area, World War II (New York: American Graves Registration Command), a "Pictorial and Historical Record" of the temporary European cemeteries containing the remains of American soldiers killed during World War II. The album illustrates twenty-four such cemeteries in France, four in Belgium, three in the Netherlands, two in England, and one each in Ireland, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Sweden and the Azores, as listed in the introductory table of contents. Each cemetery is prefaced with a printed title page presenting a map marking its location and a short history. Each is illustrated with a 17" x 8 1/4" b/w panoramic print with an identifying inscription in pencil, followed by four 6 1/2" x 4 1/4" views. Each page is wrapped in plastic, although this is torn or missing in areas. The section describing the Lajes War Cemetery in the Azores is absent, and may have been removed when the remains of U.S. soldiers interred there were later repatriated. It now contains only the remains of 37 British and Commonwealth soldiers. With several exceptions, the majority of the cemeteries depicted here no longer exist, following the re-internment of U.S. military remains in much larger burial grounds under the American Battle Monuments Commission. These vanished burial ground include St. Mere Eglise No. 1 and 2, La Cambe, Le Chene Guerin, and others established immediately after the D-Day amphibious landings to hold the casualties of that invasion. The front flyleaf bears several letters and pieces of ephemera related to former owners Wallace M. Long and Richard Lownes, both of whom served in the American Graves Registration Command. The album is bound in green faux-leather boards with gilt titles and decorations. In very good condition overall. A fine record preserving the memory of vanished monuments to the fallen American soldier.
