Enormous library of over 1,000 oblong 8vo. registration cards completed by volunteers with the Women's Home Defense Unit of the Local Council of Defense for Chester County, Pennsylvania, a subsidiary of the Council of National Defense established at the outset of World War II. Each bears the volunteer's name, address telephone number birthplace, religion, education history, fields of employment and signature, while the verso allows the volunteer to select the type of volunteer work they would like to do and the training they would like to receive, as well as, in many cases, notes from an interviewer. The archive is housed in a period file box, also containing a group of about 200 3" x 5" index cards bearing the typed information of male Civil Defense volunteers, arranged by area of expertise. The archive also contains numerous blank volunteer cards, a brochure from the Office of Civil Defense, the successor to the Council of National Defense, and membership lists from several Chester County women's organizations, from which volunteers for the Council of Defense were drawn. Should be seen.
