(1916 – 1953) Luftwaffe bomber pilot who commanded the secret bomber wing Kampfgeschwader 200, awarded the Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords for the destruction of over 300,000 GRT of Allied shipping. Good association war-date A.L.S. in German on personal letterhead, 1p. 4to., (sight), Berlin, May 17, 1943, to WILHELM OHNESORGE (1872-1962), minister of the Reich postal service who also conducted extensive research into the development of an atomic bomb. Baumbach briefly thanks Ohnesorge for lending him the time for an unspecified collaboration, and states that he will put all of his energy into their project. He signs boldly at the conclusion in black ink. The letter is matted in white along with the original transmittal envelope addressed to Ohnesorge, and with a period real-photo portrait postcard and brass identifying plaque. Very good to fine overall. While the nature of the collaboration between Baumbach and Ohnesorge is uncertain, it is interesting to note that Kampfgeschwader 200 specialized in both conducting long-range strategic bombing operations and in testing experimental aircraft, which both would have formed an essential component of the German atomic weapons program.
