(1894 - 1987) Nazi German Deputy Fuehrer and second in command after Goering, Hess was one of Hitler's closest confidantes and friends. In an unauthorized peace mission, Hess flew a German fighter to England and surrendered, purportedly attempting to ally Germany with Great Britain against Russia. His mission, of course, failed and Hess was imprisoned at Spandau where he was found hanged in 1987. His signature "Hess" incorporated in the address to his wife he has written on the front of an envelope addressed by him to his wife "Frau Ilse Hess" sent by him from confinement in Spandau Prison. The Envelope bears the printed address of the prison on the front, and an ink stamp on verso. SOLD WITH: ILSE HESS (1900–1995), wife of Rudolf Hess. After World War II she became a well-known author. T.L.S. on the verso of a postcard showing the family property, Gailenberg, Aug. 25, 1980 mentioning that she was quietly selling the aforementioned Spandau envelopes for RM 165 each; WITH a 1980 American check for $15 endorsed by Ilse Hess on verso; WITH a September, 1987 announcement of Hess' death sent by the family.
