(1895 – 1988) Kriegsmarine naval commander of the battleship Scharnhorst and participated in the "Channel Dash" in February 1942, later commanding naval officer of the German Navy in the Netherlands. He was a recipient of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross. Pair of signed items, includes a candid photo showing Hoffmann in uniform, 3 1/2" x 5 1/2" b/w, signed by him on verso and dating the image "1942" (see below), accompanied by a T.L.S., 1p. 4to., Apr. 12, 1981 in German, in part: "...from September 1939 to April 1942 I was commander of the Scharnhorst battleship. I took a picture of this ship in 1941 from the Gneisenau [included and annotated by Hoffmann], as part of the joint Atlantic operation. Furthermore, I add a photograph of myself from 1942...when I was commanding admiral in the Netherlands..." Three pieces, fine.
