BENJAMIN O. DAVIS, JR. (1912-2002), the first African-American Air Force general officer, commander of the Tuskegee Airmen during World War II. Excellent signed and inscribed book, his autobiography "Benjamin O. Davis, Jr.: American", (Washington, D.C.: Smithsonian Institution Press), 1991, 442pp. 8vo. Davis signs in black ink on the title page, adding a dedication. The front pastedown and flyleaf have additionally been signed by eighteen members of the East Coast Chapter of the Tuskegee Airmen, including: VICTOR HANCOCK, WOODROW W. CROCKETT, HAMTON "HAMP" JOHNSON, CHARLES E. MCGEE, SAMUEL RHODES, GEORGE H. LAUREL, WYLIE W. SELDON, IVAN WARE, RODERICK ROSS, CURTIS ROBINSON, HANK HENRY, LAFAYETTE BROWN, BROADUS BUTLER, LOUIS PURNELL, IRA OMAL, and one unidentified. In very good to fine condition.
