(1891 - 1916) German World War I fighter pilot who became his country's first ace, armed with Fokker's revolutionary synchronized machine gun. Soon after shooting down his 40th victim, he was himself killed in a mid-air collision with another German plane. Extremely rare vintage signed photograph of Boelcke standing in a three-quarter length pose wearing his uniform and medals, including the Pour le Mérite, 3 ¼” x 5 ¼”. Published by Willi Sanke of Berlin during World War I, numbered 363 (variant lacking the white facsimile signature) and with a printed caption at the head and base. Signed “Boelcke” in bold, dark fountain pen ink to a light area of the image. Some silvering and light age wear to the image, otherwise very good.
