Humorous manuscript D.S., 3pp. 4to., "The Catacombs", Feb. 6, 1943, a satirical award certificate for the "Commander's Cross of the Order of the Red Flask with Splash and Owl", granting the "award" to a Dr. Siegmund on the occasions of his birthday, in gratitude for his "...outstanding service in the struggle for the defection of the German army, and for his always consistent endeavors to renew and revive the outdated battalion tactics which had already earned him his glory..." The document is signed at the conclusion by a "Bucker" as "Grandmaster of the Order". The facing page features several cartoons in black ink, depicting the doctor torturing the soldiers under his care with an enormous rectal thermometer and syringe, on guard for Russians, and other scenes, most likely referencing the doctor's role at a Wehrmacht hospital camp. The "certificate" is accompanied by an A.L.S., 2pp. 4to., [n.p], Feb. 6, 1943, from Bucker to Dr. Siegmund, untranslated but presumably transmitting the "certificate" and explaining the joke. Both pieces show small tears to the edges and mild soiling, else very good.
